Teaching Artist Requirements & Expectations

Teaching Artists must pass a background check through the school district and Texas Child Care Licensing via Identogo (approximately $40 each; SBISD requires an additional $40 screening). These fees will be reimbursed after the full session is completed and all materials are returned to Theater Lab Kids, with receipt provided.

All staff must also hold a valid CPR certification (in person training)!

Schedule
Classes run from 3:30–4:30 PM. The final class includes a showcase. Teachers should plan to be available until 5:10 PM.

Qualifications & Responsibilities
 

Teaching Artists are expected to:

• Be able to pass a background check through Texas Child Care Licensing (Identogo)

• Have theater training/experience (starting pay: $50 per class)

• Have prior experience working with children (with references)

• Arrive on time and lead class from 3:30–4:30 PM (or slightly extended for makeups)

• Think quickly, engage students, and manage a classroom effectively

• Lead theater games, improv, and acting exercises

• Demonstrate knowledge of theater arts

• Have reliable transportation

• Write original plays based on student ideas - outline is provided and on your time

• Be patient and communicate any incidents promptly

• Adapt lesson plans creatively to their teaching style

• Provide weekly updates to Theater Lab Kids

• Commit to the full semester (Aug 31 – Nov 20), including potential makeup dates (Nov 30 – Dec 18)

If needed, additional 10–15 minutes may be added to class time instead of scheduling makeups. Teachers will be compensated accordingly.

 

Compensation

• $50 per class (contract position)

• Paid electronically via Zelle

• 1099-NEC issued (taxes are not withheld)

• Signed contract and affidavit

• If out of state, you background check may require additional time.
